The difference between an advisor and a broker is the incentive
April 8, 2026
Owners often ask what separates an exit planning advisor from the broker who keeps leaving voicemails. The honest answer is the incentive, and the incentive shapes the advice.
A broker is paid a success fee when a transaction closes. That is a legitimate service. But it means the broker’s reward arrives only if and when you sell, at whatever price the business commands by then.
An advisor is paid for the work that makes the business worth more, with no success fee. The reward is tied to the value of the business rather than the speed of a sale.
If you want the business to be worth more when the time comes, the work starts earlier, and it is a different kind of help. RockStack does the second kind.
